What is acrocyanosis?

Acrocyanosis is characterized by a bluish discoloration of the hands and feet, typically observed in newborns, particularly during the initial hours after birth. This condition occurs due to inadequate oxygenation in the extremities while the central parts of the body are well-oxygenated. It is generally a benign and common phenomenon, often resolving on its own as the infant acclimatizes to the extrauterine environment. The presence of acrocyanosis can be attributed to normal physiological processes, as peripheral circulation may still be adjusting, leading to a temporary lack of blood flow in the peripheral areas.
