What characterizes endometriosis?

Endometriosis is characterized primarily by the presence of endometrial-like tissue outside of the uterus. This tissue can be found on various organs within the pelvis, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the outer surface of the uterus, as well as in more distant sites in some cases. The result of this condition is often inflammation, scar tissue, and pain, particularly during menstruation.

The correct characterization is crucial for understanding both diagnosis and management of endometriosis, as it deviates from the normal location of endometrial tissue. Treatment approaches often focus on addressing the symptoms related to this abnormal placement of tissue, as well as potentially suppressing hormonal stimulation of the abnormal endometrial-like matter, which would otherwise lead to cyclical changes similar to that of normal endometrial tissue in the uterus.
